Lake Tomatoes - 2020

Thanks to the COVID pandemic, I ended up spending several months living full-time at the lake. While this wasn’t exactly planned, it gave me a great opportunity to experiment with growing a few things in this remote location.

Of course, growing a proper vegetable garden here isn’t really an option. The wildlife—deer, bears, rabbits, rodents (and who knows what else!)—would wipe it out in no time. So, I had to get creative.

The solution? Tomato plants on the front deck.

One container was extra special, thanks to a self-watering planter my husband found in the city and brought up one weekend. It came with a side tube for watering and a floating indicator that would sink when the water was low—a simple but brilliant way to keep things hydrated for a few days without constant attention.

The result? A robust harvest of tomatoes! Now, I’m just hoping for enough warm weather to ripen the last of them before the season ends—fingers crossed. 🤞

Lesson for Next Year:

Next time, I’ll only plant two tomatoes instead of three in this container—things got a little crowded! But overall, this was a huge success, and I can’t wait to try it again. 🍅✨
