Container Vege Garden 2020: Growing Through Uncertain Times
Container Veggie Garden 2020: Growing Through Uncertain Times
2020 has been… well, interesting, to say the least. With the world navigating a global pandemic, I’ve found myself self-isolating at our remote cabin, surrounded by towering trees, a beautiful lake, and plenty of wildlife.
Gardening here is an adventure—one that I share with the brown bears, deer, rabbits, birds, and most especially, the loons. Every time I hear a loon calling down the lake, I can’t help but think of one of my sons and his incredible ability to “call the loons”. It was a special talent—one that always got a response. Of course, this was before his voice changed… now, not so much. 😉
But I digress—back to our 2020 lakeside cabin garden.
For almost 20 years, we’ve had three large empty planters sitting on our deck, waiting for something to grow in them. This was the year we finally filled them, and the result has been delightful.
Even with a lake out front and woods out back, it’s the planter right outside our dining room that has captured our hearts. We pull up our chairs, sip our drinks, and simply watch it grow as the sun sets. It’s become the unexpected star of our view.
Of course, we’ll have to wait and see if the deer decide to wander onto the decks to snack on our hard work. But for now, our planters are thriving with fresh lettuce, which will eventually be swapped out for zucchini (the ever-reliable garden staple) and the herbs I’m currently nurturing indoors on the cabin windowsills, getting them strong enough for transplanting outside.
The bottom line? My husband and I have been completely taken by the joy that even the smallest garden delivers. In a year filled with uncertainty, this little container garden has been a bright spot of growth, simplicity, and connection to nature. 🌱❤️✨
