Polly Bergen sings songs of Helen Morgan - 1957

Here’s the wonderful thing about digging through vintage vinyl at second hand stores. You find gems like this one. I can almost guarantee that none of these songs sung by Polly Bergen will show up in a Spotify playlist and what a shame that would be. It was my husband that brought this record home and I think what first caught his attention was the cover, simple, elegant and seductive. And then we put this record on and what we heard was not what we expected from the image of this little slip of a thing. Her voice on this album is deep and sultry, the perfect combination for these old school torch songs. The instrumentation on this 1957 album reflects a combination of the atmosphere of speakeasy bands and theatre orchestras. Let’s just say that when we put on an album pressed in 1957 our expectations were not high, thinking this might be an interesting novelty album. and now we’re concerned that if we play it too much, future generations in our family will not have the opportunity to enjoy it as we have.
