Our New Tomato Garden: A Beautiful and Functional Design
Our New Tomato Garden: A Beautiful and Functional Design
We’ve been growing tomatoes for decades, and over the years, we’ve fine-tuned our approach to get the best results. Through trial and error, we discovered that the prime growing zone on our property—where we get maximum light and heat—is right out front, across our driveway, just across from our front door.
With that in mind, I wanted to design a tomato garden that was not only practical but also beautiful—especially since tomatoes only thrive for a few months of the year. That meant creating a space that would remain attractive even during the non-growing season, which, in our climate, is nearly eight months long.
However, there was one major challenge: the space sloped down toward the lower wall and the roadway, making it less than ideal for planting. To solve this, we added a J-shaped retaining wall, which raised and leveled the ground in this area, creating the perfect foundation for our new tomato garden.
Once the space was ready, I mapped out the design using landscape paint (as you can see in the photos), carefully laying out how everything would look before planting.
Here’s the final design:
The space is anchored by a T-shaped walkway running down the middle, making the tomatoes easily accessible. No more awkward reaching!
The garden is framed by a newly planted boxwood hedge, giving it a structured, gently oval shape that looks polished year-round.
And next year? I’m already dreaming of adding some kind of Christmas ornamentation in the space to keep it festive over the winter holidays.
As you can see from the photos, this new tomato garden is designed to be as functional as it is beautiful. I can’t wait to see how it evolves over the seasons, and of course, to enjoy fresh, homegrown tomatoes from this thoughtfully planned space. ❤️🍅✨
