May Day Chili Sauce

May Day Chili Sauce

An annual event our family looks forward to is the May Day celebrations in a small community where we have roots. These are the kind of May Day celebrations where, like the old TV program ‘Cheers’, everyone knows your name and the celebrations include a locals only parade complete with a May Day Queen and a volunteer fire department that throws candy into the families and friends lining the two block parade route. This is community spirit at its funnest and finest :)!

The day also includes a local farmers market where neighbors sell each other some of their homemade jams and jellies, baking, knitting, home brewed beer, etc. In one of our earliest years, we discovered a gentleman selling ‘his chili sauce’. It instantly became a family favorite. In later years, we didn’t know if we were attending the May Day festivities to watch the parade…or to load up on the chili sauce. But one year, out of the blue, the gentleman had moved away from the community and when he left, so did his chili sauce.

Well, after 15 years of searching cookbooks, magazines and the internet for a similar recipe, I finally found the base for our favorite chili sauce…and with some adjustments, my final product here might even be better than the original ;)!

In the end I didn’t give up…the search…for something we all love :).
